Happy Holidays!

Greetings, everyone.

So the holiday season is upon us, and so is the last post on the Furry Waves for 2021. Today will mostly be a random day, with a couple of Christmas-related sets at the end.

First, let’s take a look at Dragon. A claymation series that primarily aired on Canada’s Treehouse TV, this one is based on the Dav Pilkey (of Captain Underpants fame) series of books of the same name. This one is about an imaginative dragon who goes about his life, along with his friends.

These are from season 3, episode 9. On a rainy day, Dragon decides to pass the time playing pretend of various things at home. One of these things is a diver.

Seriously, look at those teeth. Looks like he could bite someone’s head off in one chomp.

The imagination on display is pretty high up there; the mask is an old tin, the fins are paper cutout, and of course, the pillow for an air tank.

Here’s the episode online (2nd segment):

Next up, let’s check out Daniel Tiger.

Real quick, Daniel Tiger’s Neighbourhood is basically a memorial show to the famous Fred Rogers, starring one of his puppet personalities, Daniel Tiger, who is now 5 years old and living with his family in a beach house.

Damn, talk about moving up.

Anyway, the show focuses on coping strategies and emotional intelligence. The show has a fairly large cast, but I won’t get into them here.

Two sets here. First is from ‘Daniel’s Day of Many Feelings’, during which he imagines he’s a deep sea diver. With no air tank.

No easy link here, you’ll have to hunt this one down yourself.

Next up, is a set from ‘You Can Play Your Own Way’, during which our titular character pretends he’s playing underwater games, specifically, a race.

Honestly, I like the swimsuit he’s rocking here a bit more than the wetsuit in the previous set for some reason, not sure exactly why.

You know, you’d think for a show with five seasons and a sixth on the way, where the title character literally lives in a beach house, that there would be more diving than this. Oh well.

Finally, our two Christmas sets. Both of these are very brief.

First one we have is from Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas, which is a series of short stories based around Christmas. In the first one, ‘Stuck on Christmas’, Huey, Dewey, and Louie create a Groundhog Day scenario by wishing for Christmas Day to repeat indefinitely.

The scene here is from when their massive aunt shows up and tries to drown them in kisses for the umpteeth time.

OK, even as a kid, I’ve always hated relatives that treated your face like pulled pork and had absolutely no sense of personal boundaries. Screw that noise.

Donald even forces them to receive this treatment during one run through the day, which kinda drove me bonkers. Screw you, Donald.

So that makes me feel less sympathy for what happens in this last set. This one’s from the sequel to this show ‘Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas’. In ‘Christmas: Impossible’, the nephews are trying to ensure that they get on Santa’s nice list, and they ponder all the things they did to Donald in the past year, including…

Spin cycle, bitches.

No clips for these last two; you’ll have to seek them out on your own, dear reader.

Alright, time for me to close this out for 2021. Have a great holiday season, and see you all next year!

The ‘Cover’ Band

Welcome back, everyone! Hope you’re all staying safe.

So, today, I thought focus on a specific type of pic; comic book covers. These will primarily be Disney, but I’ll sprinkle in some from other places as well. Let’s get right to it.

Firstly, here are some Donald Duck covers from the French publication, Le Journal de Mickey…

From the top left to bottom, artists are: Morgan Prost, unknown, René Guillaume, René Guillaume.

Here’s a few more from Journal de Mickey, this time starring Goofy.

Credits (starting at top left): Pierre Nicolas, Pierre Nicolas, René Guillaume, unknown

And now some with the main mouse himself. These are from various comics…

Wow, that shark in that first pic would swallow him whole…

Credits (starting from top left): Knud Ansgar Møller (Busen), unknown, unknown, unknown, Patrice Croci, Marco Gervasio, unknown

Alright, I’ll end the entry with some non-Disney stuff here. No artist info available for these ones.

Aside from the third pic, I’ll have more from the franchises depicted in the other covers at some point. Not necessarily in their own dedicated entries, mind you. I’ll leave it at that for now.

Well, that’s all for this week, everyone! See you in two weeks!

Donald Duck Swims Again

Welcome back, folks!

About a year and a half ago, I did an entry on Donald Duck, and I figure it’s high time he gets the spotlight again, so this week, that’s what’s going to happen.

First, we’re going to take a look at some comics. Donald is the King of Disney comics, appearing in more of them than any other character.

Please note that none of these comic pages will be in English.

This first one is from a German Disney Digest, Lustiges Taschenbuch 96, and the story is titled ‘Der Urlaub, der ins Wasser fiel’. The I.N.D.U.C.K.S. (An online information repository of Disney comics around the world) link is here. Artwork by Sandro Del Conte.

(I initially gave the information for the Dutch version of this, my apologies.)

Ah, the old ‘catch a diver while fishing’ gag. Always a classic.

OK, next we have ‘Zio Paperone in Brividi all’equatore‘ from Topolino 283, and this was done by the great Italian cartoonist Luciano Gatto.

Jeez, looking a little tuckered out there, duck.

Last comic for the day, this is ‘Paperino e il lago della paura‘, and is from Topolino 254. Luciano Capitanio with the art credit for this one.

Jeez, think Donald went colorblind when he picked that swimsuit out?

Alright, onto some other stuff. Here are some relevant Disney pins. For those of you who don’t know, Disney pin trading is a big deal, and there’s a lot of extremely dedicated pin traders out there.

Finally, to end the post, here’s some illustrations from various books.

Well, that’s all for today, folks. Thanks for reading, and as usual, I’ll be back in another two weeks. See you then!

The Rest of the Disney Afternoon

Alright, folks, as promised, it’s time for me to show off the rest of my collection from the Disney Afternoon block that ran from 1990 to 1997.

Jumping right in, we have Bonkers.  This was spun off of a Raw Toonage segment.  In this, Bonkers T. Bobcat becomes a toon cop alongside his human partner Lucky Piquel, and later, Miranda Wright (as in Miranda Rights, the right to silence those in police custody have).

In this episode, “Imagine That”, Bonkers and Lucky track down a toon pencil who’s been spreading graffiti.  In this scene, Bonkers and Lucky are made to lie in a toon grape field in SCUBA gear, as the ‘sour grapes’ mock them for their foolishness.

Next, we have the Gummi Bears episode, “Top Gum”.  Here, at the end of the episode, Cubbi is outlining his plans to take an undersea trip…

(EDIT: October 7th, 2019: Updated with higher quality pics)

Somehow, I doubt he’ll get far in THAT…

Next, I’ll talk about Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers.  Sadly, there’s only this of either of the chipmunks themselves, a cut commercial bumper, that I’ve seen.

rescue rangers

This set is from “One-Upsman-Chip”, where Chip and Dale end up in a war of practical jokes against one another.  In this scene, Mepps and Mole steal a giant pearl.

(EDIT: Oct. 7th 2019: Updated with higher quality pics and the second set here)

And here, they’re trying to get it back after losing it the first time.  Don’t mind Dale, it’s… a long story.

Next up, we have the Darkwing Duck episode “Dirty Money”.  In this scene, DW is taking part in an agent’s test, I believe.

“Great, now I’ll have the taste of rubber duck ass for days.”

Next up, we have a number of sets from Timon and Pumbaa.

First, we have “One Tough Bug”.

“Roach Hotel”

“Nearly Departed”

“Palm Beached”

“Beetle Romania”

Next, we have Goof Troop.  This set is from “Goof Under My Roof”, wherein it appears Pete owns half of Goofy’s property, and uses that ‘fact’ to make Goofy his bitch for much of the episode, including being his (inept) pool boy.

Also, a couple of pages out of a book…

Finally, to end off this very long post, we have a few from Gargoyles.  You know, I still have people not believe me when I say this was a Disney cartoon.

Anyway, this is from “Monsters”.

(Edit (Nov. 14th, 2020): Added more and higher quality pics here)

Whew, I think that’s all I have from Disney Afternoon.  Had even more than I remember, which surprises me.

Thanks a lot, folks, and I’ll see you next time!  When that’ll be, I’m not sure yet.  But I’ll be back soon.

Ducktales, Woo-oo!

Well, folks, the new Ducktales cartoon’s first season is in full swing, and largely to positive reviews.

Before you ask, as of this posting, no, there’s nothing to add to the collection from that… yet.  Hopefully that’ll change soon.

However, in the meantime, why don’t we take a look at it’s predecessor?  Hell, maybe we’ll even look at the rest of its Disney Afternoon co-stars too.

Ducktales definitely had it’s share of underwater adventures.  Today, we’ll look at the SCUBA examples of that.

Firstly, these two sets are from “Much Ado About Scrooge”.  The first part is Scrooge after super door to door salesman Filler Brushbill gets done with selling him a bunch of random crap he doesn’t need.  The final bill: $444,444.04.  And a pair of four dollar glow in the dark socks.

Second set here is said super duper salesman sneaking aboard Scrooge’s boat as he seeks out a lost play, and putting to shore as they arrive.

That ‘stashe is totally fake.  Has to be.

This is a single shot from “The Bride Wore Stripes”, where Ma Beagle tries to catch Scrooge in a marriage scheme to take his money in the event of his death (or 1/2 in a divorce).  This was so quick and brief that I just got the one pic.

Ducktales - Bride1

Pretty sure this is Burger.  Can’t believe they turned him into a total stick figure in the present cartoon.

Here, we have a postman delivering a party invitation to the Creature From the Blue Lagoon in “The Ducky Horror Picture Show”.

That’s just dedication to your job there.

Next, we have Fenton Crackshell counting all of Scrooge’s money that he dumped into the lake in “Liquid Assets Part 1”.  Also included is a show commercial bumper of him.

Whew, and we’ve hardly even looked at the main ducks yet!

From “Merit Time Adventure”, the crew looks into sinkings of transport ships from a sea monster’s rampage.  At one point, Scrooge gets kidnapped, and escapes via SCUBA, and deal with the ‘sea monster’ the same way.

Next, we have “Wrongway In Rongway”, which was the five part series premiere.  Here, Scrooge is testing out some underwater dredging gear, and then escaping some quicksand.

Don’t ask how Scrooge slipped on that SCUBA gear while completely submerged in quicksand.  Cartoon magic, people.  It explains everything.

Next, we have “Bermuda Triangle Tangle”, where the ducks get trapped on an island made out of seaweed that is inhabited by a giant sea monster.  In this scene, they’re trying to cut the seaweed off of a ship’s propeller to try to make their escape.

Finally, for the last of the cartoon, here’s “Duckman of Aquatraz”, where Scrooge gets framed for a robbery he didn’t commit and gets sent to Aquatraz, the Alcatraz equivalent for Duckberg.  In this scene, the nephews are recovering a painting that can prove their uncle’s innocence.

To end off today, we also have some miscellany from the show.  I’ll just mash these up into one group.  A fair number of comic pages here.

Come back tomorrow, where we’ll take a look at the rest of it’s Disney Afternoon compatriots!

Daffy the Frogman… or Duckman?

OK, everyone.  I said I’d be focusing on a famous duck today, and here he is.

Did you know he was number 14 on TV Guide’s top 50 cartoon characters list?

Daffy, considering his long history, actually doesn’t have a huge place in my collection, but he does have enough for a post to be made about him.  The above book was about Daffy trying to get the better of Bugs when they’re both camp counselors of a Rabbit Troop and a Duck Troop respectively.  Of course, Daffy doesn’t exactly use ethical means to accomplish this.

Next, we have a few comics.  This is from ‘Cabana Boy’ in Daffy Duck 64.

comic1

This next one is from ‘Down in the Depths’, from Yosemite Sam And Bugs Bunny 44.

Finally, one more page.  Unfortunately, I don’t know where this one is from.

comic2

Next, we have some shots from the Looney Tunes Show episode ‘Peel of Fortune’.

(Edit (Feb. 6th, 2022): Replaced with 1080p versions)

Some miscellany here.

He’s even done some diving when he was but a wee babe.   The Baby Looney Tunes episode here is ‘Let Them Make Cake’.

(Edit (Feb. 5th, 2022): Replaced Baby Looney Tunes pics with 1080p versions)

Finally, we have a shot from a Six Flag Great Adventure & Safari ride called Daffy’s Deep Diver.  Photo comes from greatadventurehistory.com

20045243 copy

Well, that’s all I have of Daffy, at least solo.  There’s more with him in a group, but I’ll save those for another time.

Tomorrow, one more famous duck takes the stage…

Duck, Duck… Goose?

Continuing Fall Week, it’s time to pay tribute for the next two or three days to the ducks that will be making their way south for the winter.  We’ll be focusing on ducks (and their relatives like geese) of all kinds.

First up, we have the cult favourite, Count Duckula!  These are from ‘Vampire Vacation’.  Also here is a figure.

Guess maybe his duck genealogy protects from that nasty reaction vampires usually have to water, eh?

This next set is from the series ‘As Aventuras do Patinho’, more specifically, the episode ‘O Patinho No Fundo Do Mar’.

Next is a few of Jack Quacker from Suzy’s Zoo, a franchise that sells various things, including calendars, books, stationery, etc.  Jack’s basically the jock  of the group, and it’s de-facto leader.

Next, we have a few of Wade from US Acres (also known as Orson’s Farm).  US Acres was both a comic and a cartoon, actually.  The episode here is ‘Hamelot’.

Here’s a few logos from various places.

Finally, to end the day off, we have sets from a show called WordWorld, which ran from 2007-2011, primarily on PBSKids.  The characters and pretty much any object of importance was made from the letters of their names, which was a pretty unique, and trippy, gimmick.

Duck here is apparently the youngest, and still learning to spell and such.  He tends to steal the show though.

The first set here is from ‘The Best Nest’.

Next up, we have ‘The Dancing Duck Bonanza’, where he tries to figure out how to incorporate Shark (yes, a shark is a re-occuring character here) and his underwater dancing talents into a land based concert.

(Edit (Aug. 26th, 2022): Replaced 1080p versions and more pics.)

May I mention, he looks damn dapper in that top hat.  Also, note the hole in it for his snorkel.  Nice touch.

Finally, we have ‘Duck Saves Spider’s Web’, guest starring Elephant.

And that ends today’s entry!  Come back next time, where I’ll be focusing on a certain famous duck…

Random Day!

Hi, everyone. No, I haven’t lost interest in maintaining this blog already, I just haven’t been able to fully decide what I want to showcase next.

So to fix that, I’m going to just show off some random-ish pieces today. No real theming here, just tossing some stuff out there.

First, we have A Miss Mallard Mystery, which is a 2000 cartoon that was somewhat loosely based on Robert Quackenbush’s series, The Miss Mallard Mysteries, which stars the titular character, well, solving mysteries, along with her nephew Willard.

These are shots from an episode called ‘Evil Under the Sea’.

OK, I know it’s stating the obvious, but sharks will be prominent in this blog. (As usual, click for bigger pictures)

(Edit (Feb. 3rd, 2022): Added 1080p versions)

The good news is that, so far in this blog, they’re 0-4.

Pretty pedestrian stuff after that. There’s more underwater action after this, but it’s outside the purpose of this blog. Feel free to look the episode up, though.

Next up is something I’m sure some of you are familiar with; Neopets! I played this for a short while a VERY long time ago. Didn’t really get into it, but many, many people have. Considering that they’ve been around since 1999, there isn’t a lot of pics from them in the collection, but there are some:

That’s all I’ve been able to find of Neopets, in it’s entirety.  Oh well.  Some of it IS cool looking, though.

OK, one more for today.  This one is actually a 1999 German children’s diving manual called “Robbi geht Tauchen”, or Robbi goes Diving.  I actually was able to get a physical copy of the book with the help of a friend several years back.  For a children’s book, it’s quite detailed, going into specifics of the types of equipment used, pressure, and equalization, amongst other things.

The basic story going here is that Robbi, an otter of all things, gets interested in this whole diving thing, and whilst swimming about, he meets and befriends Krakeelchen, an octopus that apparently is a divemaster…?

No, I don’t know how or why an octopus would be a divemaster.

Anyway, the rest of the book is spent with Krakeelchen teaching Robbi the ins and outs of diving, including SCUBA, because he’s cool like that.

Here are nine pages from the book.

As you can see, it’s actually a pretty fun book, with tons of details.

Oh, and please don’t ask me for translations.  My German is virtually non-existent.  Make use of Google Translate if you’re curious.

So there you go, folks.  I’ll probably post one more of these before the end of the week, and on Friday, I’ll start my first themed week!  Stay tuned…
